The New York Yankees' outfielder Trent Grisham accepted the qualifying offer, leading many fans to believe the Yankees will be unable to spend as freely as they would like this offseason.
Grisham had a great season, and if he can replicate what he did last season, the Yankees will have no problems with him being back. However, paying Grisham could cap how much the Yankees spend in other spots. The team is still interested in re-signing Cody Bellinger, which should cost them plenty. Now, with Grisham back in the Bronx, bringing Bellinger back would create problems for Jasson Domínguez and Spencer Jones' playing time.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman also noted that the team is interested in fortifying the rotation with Carlos Rodón and Gerrit Cole slated to miss the start of the year. However, $22 million going toward Grisham has fans questioning whether the Yankees can make all the moves they want. Cashman was asked whether the team could still achieve their offseason goals even after Grisham accepted the qualifying offer.
..."Yes," Cashman told New York Daily News' Gary Phillips on Thursday.
The Yankees reportedly want Bellinger back and are interested in Devin Williams coming back. They are also expected to pursue Kyle Tucker and pitching.
"I’m good at spending money,” Cashman told Phillips, noting he has not been given a payroll number from Hal Steinbrenner.
The Yankees may have a surplus in the outfield now if Bellinger is back, with plenty of money tied up there as well. However, Cashman does not think Grisham accepting the qualifying offer will hold his team back from adding in other spots.
