Peralta just had the best year of his career and the Brewers picked up his $8 million club option for next season. His contract is extremely team-friendly, but he is just one season away from signing, presumably, a much more lucrative contract. Historically, the Brewers have dealt away star pitchers a year before they hit the open market, knowing they will not be able to afford paying them.
The Brewers have done this with Corbin Burnes, Devin Williams and Josh Hader. Peralta is a legit trade candidate, and Brandon Woodruff returning to Milwaukee next season seemingly increases those odds. Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter predicted the Mets would trade for Peralta this winter.
...Peralta will not cost the Mets much next season. Only having to pay him $8 million for next season is a bargain, but after that, he will become much more expensive. However, the Mets, unlike the Brewers, have no shortage of money. Peralta is a proven ace and has made at least 30 starts in each of the last three seasons.
Since 2021, he has a 3.30 ERA in 141 games. He is the type of pitcher the Mets could rely on as they look to get to the World Series. As much as the Brewers love having him in Milwaukee, the business side of baseball may force them into shipping him off.
