The Major League Baseball offseason is underway, and plenty of players are starting to sign with new teams. While a majority of superstars remain unsigned, role players are starting to land on new teams.

The Colorado Rockies have reportedly signed Nicky Lopez. The veteran infielder elected free agency from the Chicago Cubs last month and has now signed a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, according to the Denver Gazette's Kevin Henry.

Lopez spent most of last season bouncing around the league. He signed with the Cubs in February. He was released in March and signed with the Los Angeles Angels. He was designated for assignment and then returned to the Cubs, only to be outrighted to Triple-A Iowa. He eventually elected free agency again, landing with the Arizona Diamondbacks, who released him in July.

After that, he signed with the New York Yankees and was released less than a month later.

Finally, he landed back with the Cubs.

Lopez has always been a glove-first infielder. Last season, he played a total of 18 big league games. He had just a .220 OPS. He has seven seasons of big league experience and could be a solid bench player for the Rockies. He will look to prove himself on a team that is desperate for any kind of production.

Lopez will have a chance to make the team out of spring training, given his experience and versatile defense. He has played second base, shortstop, first base, left field and third base in his career. However, most of his time has been spent up the middle of the infield.
