Last summer, the Yankees traded for David Bednar, Camilo Doval and Jake Bird. Bird was sent to Triple-A after some struggles, but he figures to play a role next season. Doval and Bednar are both under contract as well. The Yankees may not see a need to re-sign Weaver.
Weaver was a starter early in his career, but became a weapon out of the Yankees' bullpen after landing with the team in 2023. NorthJersey.com's Pete Caldera predicted Weaver would sign with the Philadelphia Phillies this offseason.
..."(He) has the flexibility to set up, close, or return to a contender's rotation in 2026," wrote Caldera.
Weaver is reportedly open to starting again, but the Phillies may simply need him in the bullpen. Weaver has served as a closer for the Yankees, but lost the role thanks to the arrival of David Bednar. He closed some games last season when Devin Williams struggled.
The Phillies have Jhoan Duran, so they do not need Weaver as a closer. However, he is a proven leverage arm who could be a key player for them. He has a 3.22 ERA since joining the Yankees. During New York's run to the World Series in 2024, Weaver had a 1.76 ERA in 12 games. He finished eight games and notched four saves.
