A monument-building startup said on social media that it is planning to build a 500-foot statue of George Washington with a stainless-steel exterior.

The organization More Monuments said on X that the statue of the nation's first president will also feature a 150-foot concrete pedestal, bringing the monument to 650 feet. The statue will be named “The Colossus of George.”

Newsweek reached out to More Monuments founder Mo Mahmood for comment.

Why It Matters

More Monuments said on its website that the purpose of the statue is “to celebrate America's incredible accomplishments and to commemorate the hero who led its creation.”

The company claimed that the monument would be the largest in the United States upon completion. The current tallest monument in the U.S. is the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri, standing at 630 feet.

...

What To Know

The project is funded by private fundraising from individuals with high net worths, nonprofit donations, trades of the cryptocurrency $GEORGE coin, sponsorships, sales of mini statues and long-term tourism, the company said on X.

More Monuments completed its first project in December, Bloomberg reported. The company built a 54-foot statue of an oil derrick, now the largest monument in the Austin, Texas, area.

Mahmood has not determined where the statue will be located, but he is looking for a location in the Southeast, Bloomberg reported. He has also not determined what the statue's interior will be made of or how much it will cost, according to the outlet.

The project will cost at least tens of millions of dollars. Mahmood said the company has already raised $175,000 for the project and that his team is building a series of plasters, Bloomberg reported. The most recent was 11 feet tall.

“I like large things,” Mahmood said.

What People Are Saying

Mo Mahmood, founder of More Monuments, told Bloomberg: “When you look at my statue, you’ll be able to tell it’s George Washington, and I think that’s important. When they look at it, I want people to feel a sense of hope and optimism.”

What Happens Next

It is unclear how long it will take to complete the monument, but a 50-foot plaster will be revealed on July 4, 2026, to coincide with the nation's 250th birthday.
