What movies have you been sitting down to watch of late? Maybe you've caught an old favourite on TV. Perhaps you like to - quite literally - keep it real with a beloved collection of bespoke titles on DVD or Blu-Ray that you dip into from time or time. Or, chances are, like most of us - your film watching is provided to you by one or more of the world's major streaming services. Over on the biggest of all (yes, Netflix...), the past week has been dominated by folk enjoying serial killer thrillers, dream-based animated fun, Hindi hits, music documentaries and schmaltzy but fun romantic-comedies. 10. The Little Things - 4,700,000 views last week
Denzel Washington’s weary deputy sheriff continues to draw audiences in with this slow burn serial killer thriller. The film pairs him with Rami Malek as a cocky rising detective and Jared Leto as the unnerving suspect, who may well know more than he lets on. There's a grim atmosphere and a somewhat ambiguous ending to add to the star power here. It's not a classic, but it's serviceable and plenty of Netflix subscribers caught it this past week. 9. Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy - 4,800,000 views
This documentary shines a light on Selena Quintanilla’s early years with her family band. Interviews, rare footage and archival performances dance viewers through the long road from small gigs to her wider cultural impact. The film also explores how the family shaped The Queen of Tejano Music's career and protected her legacy. The movie seems to be resonating strongly with fans who grew up with her music in Latin America, but it still makes for a fascinating watch to anyone unfamiliar with Selena or Los Dinos. 8. Jolly LLB 3 - 5,400,000 views
Courtroom chaos, biting satire and heartfelt drama abound in this third outing in the Hindi film series. Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi play rival lawyers whose case starts out as a fight over land and corruption, but ends as a fight for justice for a poor farmer’s widow. Jolly LLB 3 sticks to the franchise’s usual mix of humour with social critique, even as its 157 minute runtime stretches the tone from light comedy to serious drama to not insignificant drain on your time. 7. Train Dreams - 6,200,000 views
Adapted from Denis Johnson’s critically acclaimed novella, this historical drama follows a labourer drifting through the American West as the landscape around him shifts with the rise of industry and the building of the nation's railroads. Western fans expecting gunfights and sheriff showdowns might not fully appreciate the quiet tone, sweeping cinematography and focus on working-class life during a changing era. But they will be impressed with Joel Edgerton's excellent performance. It is not a loud movie by any stretch, but it rewards your attention, which explains why it's gained a fair bit of momentum already. 6. A Merry Little Ex-Mas - 9,000,000 views
Christmas movies always find an eager audience and this seasonal romantic comedy is delivering exactly what viewers want under their trees/on their screens. The plot follows former lovers thrown together during Christmas week, turning awkward reunions into second chances. Light, breezy humour, cosy settings and a crowd-pleasing final act make this an unfussy watch while putting up your decorations. These films often surge up the charts as soon as the calendar hits late November and this Alicia Silverstone-starrer is no exception. Watch it, enjoy it, immediately forget it. Perfect. 5. KPop Demon Hunters - 10,100,000 views
By this point even people that live under rocks know about Kpop Demon Hunters. It's a cultural titan, one that's surpassed simple 'animated Netflix movie'. Sure, it is one of those. But with the music and general pop culture impact, this thing is hitting landmark status. It's been in the Netflix top five for almost six months now. And it's going absolutely nowhere. 4. The Carman Family Deaths - 10,200,000 views
True crime buffs have been flocking to this new documentary film about the long-running Carman case. The film revisits the 2013 shooting of family patriarch John Chakalos and the 2016 disappearance of his daughter Linda during a fishing trip with her son Nathan. It pieces together interviews, court filings, search records and family testimony to examine the allegations, the inheritance disputes and many of the case's unanswered questions. Its steady pacing and layered structure have had viewers thoroughly engaged throughout the past week and look likely to keep folk hooked for a while yet. (Picture: Netflix)
3. Frankenstein - 14,600,000 views
Guillermo del Toro’s vision for this Gothic tale is bringing a fresh audience to the classic story. Oscar Isaac leads the cast as the tormented but heavily flawed God complex-afflicted Dr. F, with Mia Goth, Jacob Elordi and Christoph Waltz rounding out the impressive ensemble cast. Critics praised the film’s emotional weight and ambitious production design, all anchored by del Toro’s trademark mix of melancholy and humanity. Is it a little too long and lacking true impact? 2. In Your Dreams - 16,600,000 views
Global audiences are getting super into this new original fantasy adventure about two siblings who stumble into a dream world after a bedtime wish goes wrong. Their search for the elusive Sandman gives the film a fun and rather playful mix of quest-based storytelling and bright visual spectacle. Parents are happy with the inventive creature design and fast pacing. The Roger Ebert website was pretty effusive too, saying: 'In Your Dreams is an exciting, imaginative and sometimes funny adventure story. 1. Champagne Problems - 20,500,000 views
This past week’s most-watched movie on Netflix is an unchallenging watch called Champagne Problems. Like A Very Merry Ex-Mas, this is making its mark with a blend of holiday season charm and easy rom-com vibes. The story follows a driven American executive sent to Paris to secure a historic champagne estate deal for her firm, only to fall for the owner’s son. It's a predictable but enjoyable love story set against picturesque vineyards of rural France and glitzy Parisian nights. It's sweet but clichéd.
