Seven states in the U.S. Northeast and mid-Atlantic are predicted to experience a second winter storm only days after the first dumped heavy snow and shuttered schools across the region.

Tuesday's potent storm generated as much as 12 inches of snow across parts of the Northeast, closing hundreds of schools and snarling traffic. Lingering effects from the winter storm will continue through Wednesday morning. By Thursday night, a "quick-hitting storm" will return to the same region, AccuWeather predicted.

Meteorologists are uncertain of snowfall totals for the incoming storm, but AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alan Reppert told Newsweek they likely won't be as high as the storm on Tuesday produced.

"Any areas that do see snowfall with this will be more on the lighter side, 3 inches or less for the most part," he said.

As of Tuesday night, National Weather Service (NWS) winter weather advisories or storm warnings lingered in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, northeastern Pennsylvania and up through Maine. The alerts were set to expire by Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, depending on location.

"The first winter-storm of the season is well under way across interior New England this afternoon with widespread moderate and heavy snow across the region. Meanwhile, a low pressure system is rapidly intensifying just off the Mid-Atlantic," the NWS said in a Tuesday forecast. "This coastal storm will lift additional moisture coming from the Atlantic along a sharp coastal front and then dump the moisture as snow over interior New England through tonight before ending Wednesday morning. Snowfall totals of generally 5 to 10 inches are expected from central New England to Downeast Maine with isolated 12 inches possible."

By Thursday night, more snow will return, with ice posing a threat to some states as well and rain hitting farther south, AccuWeather reported.

Snow is expected for parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, all of which experienced impacts from the first storm.

Farther south, ice and rain could mix to create dangerous travel across much of Virginia, eastern Tennessee and North Carolina.

The new storm will accompany a burst of cold air, and how the two interact over the Southern U.S. will decide where accumulating snow falls, AccuWeather predicted.

"Should the cold air push too forcibly into the Northeast late in the week, the storm will escape out to sea with mostly rain for the Southeast and perhaps a narrow zone of snow, ice and rain or snow on its northern edge," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

Chances are low for a major snowstorm, AccuWeather added. However, depending on the storm's track, major travel hubs in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City and Boston could be hindered by the new storm.
