By Aaliyan MohammedShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberAnthony Volpe has failed to breakout offensively for the Yankees, but until last season, his glove was reliable enough to keep him in the lineup. However, last season, he struggled defensively, leading the league in errors.
Volpe played through a shoulder injury last season, and comments on whether it affected him offensively were mixed. However, his offensive numbers were not far off from what they have been throughout his career. He has a .662 career OPS, and the Yankees could use an upgrade at a premium position.
The Yankees have stuck by Volpe, but there are better options available. With the Texas Rangers reportedly looking to cut payroll, Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer predicted the Yankees would trade for Corey Seager.
...Seager signed a $325 million deal with the Rangers before the 2022 season. He helped win a World Series in 2023, hitting six home runs in that postseason. He was named World Series MVP, and last season was the first time since he joined the Rangers that he was not an All-Star. He still had a great season, hitting 21 home runs in 102 games.
Seager is a five-time All-Star, two-time World Series champion, two-time World Series MVP and three-time Silver Slugger. He is one of the best shortstops in baseball and would change the complexion of the Yankees' lineup. Replacing Volpe, one of the worst offensive shortstops, with one of the best would help the Yankees get back to the World Series. Not to mention, Seager has proven he can perform when the lights are the brightest.
