By Adeola AdeosunShareNewsweek is a Trust Project memberTwo University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football players were stabbed on Saturday morning at the Football Operations Center on Sixth Avenue South in Birmingham, with another player now in custody.
A UAB spokesperson confirmed to Newsweek on Saturday afternoon that the "two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition," adding that "the suspect–another player–remains in custody, and an investigation is taking place."
The Context
The incident raises serious questions about player safety and campus security at UAB, occurring just hours before the team's scheduled game against South Florida.
The team's decision to proceed with the 2 p.m. game at Protective Stadium demonstrates the complex balance between maintaining athletic schedules and addressing traumatic events affecting team members.
What To Know
The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m., with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue responding to the scene at the Football Operations Center where two individuals sustained stab wounds. Both victims were transported to UAB Hospital for their injuries.
A UAB spokesperson told Newsweek that the two players are recovering.
UAB player Daniel Israel Mincey was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Saturday afternoon on charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder, according to local media outlets, though authorities have not officially confirmed if his arrest is connected to the stabbings.
Despite the morning's events, the UAB football team elected to play their scheduled game against South Florida later that afternoon.
What People Are Saying
UAB spokesperson Alicia Rohan told Newsweek on Saturday: "We're grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition. Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect – another player – remains in custody, and an investigation is taking place. The team elected to play today's game. UAB's top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students. Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time."
What Happens Next?
UAB Police and Public Safety will continue to investigate the incident.
