The Boston Red Sox won the Alex Bregman free agency sweepstakes last winter, but they had to give him a very player-friendly deal to get him to Fenway Park.

Bregman had a very good season with the Red Sox. He was one of their better players, but he used the opt-out clause in his contract to land back in free agency this winter. As a result, the star infielder is likely going to land a huge deal to lock him up for a chunk of the rest of his career.

Zach Mentz of Cleveland.com recently projected Bregman would sign a blockbuster six-year, $174 million deal in free agency this winter.

Boston Red Sox infielder Alex Bregman...

"Bregman hits free agency again after signing a shorter, opt-out contract with the Red Sox last winter," Mentz wrote. "After posting an .821 OPS and earning his third career All-Star selection with Boston this season, Bregman is likely to finally cash in on a long-term deal. The Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers are rumored to be among interested suitors."

The top suitors in the sweepstakes will likely be the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, and the aforementioned Red Sox.

The Cubs and Tigers were reportedly interested in Bregman last year. Both teams have massive holes at third base and could use Bregman in that role.

The Mets are coming off a very disappointing season. They need to make a splash in free agency. Adding Bregman at the hot corner should help them get to the postseason next year.

The Phillies are set to lose a few top free agents. If Kyle Schwarber and/or Ranger Suárez leave in free agency, the Phillies will need to make a move for a star like Bregman.

The Red Sox are likely the favorites to sign Bregman. They could give him a huge deal to keep him at Fenway Park for a long time.
